Do you, a rural producer in the Legal Amazon, have surplus native vegetation on your property? CONSERV can compensate you for conserving the area that could legally be deforested. Private and voluntary, the mechanism already operates in Mato Grosso and is in the process of being expanded to other Amazon states.
The CONSERV project financially compensates rural producers located in the Legal Amazon that have native vegetation areas on their properties subject to legal deforestation, i.e., those that are outside the legal reserve quota.
Launched in 2020 and now in full operation, CONSERV puts in place an efficient and profitable business model for producers, while identifying the important effort that these actors play in conservation.
This initiative establishes a new paradigm for land use, in which the standing forest has an intrinsic value for providing ecosystem services and maintaining biodiversity. Its value, therefore, must be recognized by the market and turned into a source of income for rural landowners.
The CONSERV concept is the result of three years of research and dialogue with rural producers. The model was developed by IPAM (Amazon Environmental Research Institute) and is run in partnership with the Woodwell Clmate Research Center and the EDF (Environmental Defense Fund).

CONSERV transforms the conserved surplus forest into an asset; thus, the rural landowner has a new income option.
This is a consolidated opportunity to be part of the construction of a new paradigm de uso da terra no Brasil, reconhecendo o valor do proprietário na conservação da mata e da floresta na produção agropecuária e no clima, além de promover o bom agronegócio entre os consumidores e frente ao mercado internacional.
Joining CONSERV is voluntary, so the producer can evaluate the advantages of participating in the project.
